The European University of the Seas – SEA-EU
The European University of the Seas – SEA-EU is an alliance of 6 European Universities. It is structured through a set of key ideas: the development of long-term inclusive and sustainable educational projects, the promotion of European values and identity, the creation of a model for other European and non-European universities, the promotion of a series of values that are implemented through common governance, the articulation of combined studies in several countries and the increase in the mobility of students and staff, as well as the promotion of innovative methodologies and practical lessons aimed at the labor market or the mutual recognition of degrees.
Some of the goals of the SEA-EU project are to build an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and the planet, to strengthen European identity and values, and to ensure the international competitiveness of education and research related to innovation and knowledge transfer.
Through the project, an entrepreneurial, managerial way of thinking is encouraged, supporting green/blue growth and development. Working on the development of innovative pedagogical methods in order to bring personalized content, exchange knowledge, encourage competitive skills and promote open science. Through the exchange of good practices, adaptability and openness to different regions in Europe and beyond is promoted.
SEA-EU-DOC is an Erasmus + Strategic Partnerships for higher education project, focused on doctoral studies in marine, maritime and coastal sciences.
SEA-EU-DOC aim to broaden employment opportunities of doctorate holders in the particular context of marine sciences. Indeed, with the deficit of academic permanent employment contracts in Europe and the growing employment precariousness in this sector, more doctorate holders are turning to jobs outside academia. Preparing the students for a broad range of career options matching the reality of the labour market falls on the responsibility of universities.
We are planning to increase the employability of our doctorate holders by:
- giving visibility to the diversity of career paths for doctorate holders;
- identifying valuable skills acquired during the doctorate that can be transferred to any work context;
- advancing the quality of doctoral training to better fit the diversity of employment opportunities of doctorate holders;
- strengthening links between university and the private sector through the creation of a European network of marine sciences doctorate holders, students and institutions.
The SEA-EU DOC project is based on the conclusions of a survey carried out 621 former PhD students, in order to assess the needs and level of satisfaction of their graduates regarding their career and their entry into the labour market.
Reinforcing SustainablE Actions, resilience, cooperation and harmonization across and by the SEA-EU Alliance is an initiative of the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU), an alliance of six coastal European universities which share research interests and a commitment to integrate their infrastructures and harmonize their functioning to thrive and adapt to today’s changing world. The 6 coastal universities of the SEA-EU alliance are pooling their complementary expertise to develop the reSEArch-EU project which aims to bolster the research and innovation capacity of SEA-EU, in step with our shared, integrated and long-term strategy, by:
- building an anti-fragile (beyond resilient and robust) and innovative pan-European Alliance;
- aligning our expertise and resources with the needs of the production system;
- co-designing, co-creating and co-delivering knowledge with and for stakeholders and citizens;
- establishing a common Open Science and Open Research Data Policy;
- crafting and developing a common multidisciplinary research agenda that contributes to sustainable development;
- sharing our critical analyses and best practices for the successful implementation of our research and innovation strategies with other ‘European University’ Alliances.
